Unfortunately, this course will not be running due to the low number of people booking. We will be offering it again in the Autumn programme.
In our reading and discussion of the “Aeneid”, we shall be looking at the mythology of the fall of Troy, the themes of fate and destiny, the importance of ‘pietas’ and ‘virtus’ in relation to the character of Aeneas.
We will also examine how his story fits into the foundation myths surrounding the history of Rome, as well as considering the aims and objectives of the poet and the extent to which the poem may be seen as propaganda for the rule of the emperor Augustus.
We shall be reading the verse translation ‘The Aeneid’ by Sarah Ruden. (revised and expanded edition 2021) ISBN 978- 0- 300- 24010- 8
Please try to read books 1-3 before the first session
