This short course uses paintings, prints and architecture to shed light on the exciting and colourful period around the time of the French revolution.

At the time of the French revolution and Napoleon there was also a revolution in the world of art and fashion. What do the great neo-classical artists tell us about the world they lived in? Why do all the characters in Jane Austen books dress in such a distinctive way?

This course looks at the re-awakening of interest in the classical world and the work of David, Gros, Goya, Ingres, Vigée le Brun, Gericault and others to glimpse into the tumultuous world of early 19th century Europe.
