Lionheart and Lackland – the reigns of King Richard and King John

In this course we will explore the reigns of the Plantagenet kings Richard and John. The course will cover the Third Crusade, the Angevin wars with France, the First Barons War and Magna Carta.

Over six weeks we will consider the reigns and reputations of King Richard I (who reigned 1189-1199) and King John (who reigned from 1199-1216).

We will explore Richard’s character and actions as king, his involvement in the Third Crusade, including his rivalry with Saladin and his kidnap and random on his voyage home.

We will also consider John’s impact as king, the reasons for rebellion against him and the First Baron’s war. Magna Carta, its significance and importance then and now will also be investigated, together with significant individuals including William Marshal ‘the knight that saved England’.
