This course will look at the origins and philosophies of the Arts and Crafts Movement, examining its roots and covering its key figures and designers, examples of work produced, and the movement’s longer term legacy.
“With the arrogance of youth, I determined to do no less than to transform the world with Beauty. If I have succeeded in some small way, if only in one small corner of the world, amongst the men and women I love, then I shall count myself blessed, and blessed, and blessed, and the work goes on.” (William Morris, The Well At The World’s End: Volume I)
Reacting against the ugliness of the Industrial Revolution, the Arts and Crafts pioneers aimed to make the world a better place for workers and wider audiences through beautiful design and social reform: we will explore the origins of the movement, and the ideals and work of key designers.
This is a repeat of the course offered in November 2024.
