From Tsar to Soviets 1917-1922

In this course we will explore the February revolution of 1917, the Provisional Government and Dual Power, the role of Lenin and the Bolsheviks, and the impact and outcomes of the October revolution and the setting up of the new Soviet government. The course will also cover the Russian Civil war 1917-1922, the main factions, outcomes and its impact on Russia and the world.

Over six weeks, we will explore the compelling and complicated revolutions in Russia in 1917, and track the causes, events and outcomes of the monumental events which followed. We will investigate the end of the Tsarist autocracy and its effects, the rise of Communism and the impact of Bolshevik ideology on global politics. The impact on the First World War and the effect on geo-politics will also be covered, together with the Russian civil war, and the formation of the Soviet Union.

We will cover the political, economic and cultural changes of this important period in world history, and explore the global influence of the spread of ideas from Russia in the Twentieth century.
