Original, intuitive and imaginative, Dylan Thomas brought his obsession with words and imagery into all his work: his poetry, stories, plays and radio broadcasts. But he also fostered a scandalous reputation as a hard-living, drunken, doomed poet who compromised his life and art. Thomas said of himself: ‘I hold a beast, an angel and a madman in me’ and his stature as one of the literary greats has been much debated.
We’ll spend a day with Thomas and through discussion and close study of excerpts from some of his iconic works such as Under Milk Wood and his poetry such as Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night, we’ll see what we make of this son of Wales.
You may wish to bring your own copies of Under Milk Wood or Thomas’s Collected Poems. However, all the texts we will be looking are in the paperback edition of the Dylan Thomas Omnibus (Weidenfeld & Nicolson 2014). Additional articles and information will be emailed.
