Bayeux Tapestry and Other Early Medieval Treasures

This six week course will focus on 6 early medieval objects including the Bayeux Tapestry and the Winchester Bible. Current knowledge of the making and history of each object will be discussed in detail.

The Bayeux Tapestry is due to go on display at the British Museum in September 2026. This course begins with a detailed discussion of the tapestry and follows with sessions dedicated to objects of similar date, namely the Gloucester Candlestick, the Lewis Chessmen, Chichester panels, Becket Casket and the Winchester Bible.

We will consider how these items were made, the purpose to which they were put and related items.
