An Introduction to Artists’ Books

Making an Artist Book combines craft with art and is an art form started in France in the early 1900s.  We will look at some examples, then make a Pocket Accordion with separate cover. This book can be used to store receipts, stamps, or tickets.

Then we will make a hard cover with patterned end sheets into which we will sew a concertina book block. Finally, if time allows, a one-sheet Snake Book!

During the day we will be making books that are different from the ones made in the previous class in 2025. but the course is still suitable for new participants. We will be folding, gluing, cutting and stitching!

Participants are invited to bring a scalpel or scissors, cutting mat, bone folder, metal ruler, glue stick, awl, and pencil.

The tutor will provide paper, book cloth, board, glue, linen thread, and needles . If you do not have any of the equipment there will be some to borrow and share. There will be an additional charge of £2 to cover the cost of materials.
