Waveney Payne
After
four years at art college, my early career was spent in the wholesale fashion
industry designing and pattern cutting and then lecturing in an art college.
Buying a second hand knitting machine started my love for creating individual
garments for children and then working as a designer for a knitwear company.
Some years later I developed a small business designing and printing specialist
t shirts and tracksuits which I sold at horse shows, as well as to shops in
Kent.
My life and career changed when we moved as a family to Somerset, however my
love of design and creating things never left me and after attending a beading
course in Bristol it set me off on another path of making jewellery, learning
silversmithing and exploring the Japanese craft of Temari.
Colour from the natural world is an inspiration for my work. I enjoy looking
closely at the colours of animals, birds, plants, autumn leaves, the beach,
seaweed, sand glass! It’s amazing where it all takes me -usually to buying all
sorts of threads, beads, fabric and wires that I don’t need immediately but
which I believe will always come in handy!
It’s a lot of fun to see what can be created with very few materials and it can
be addictive! I’m always searching out new ideas and ways of working which I love
to share with others in a relaxed and informal way.
I look forward to seeing you on a workshop sometime.
