Origins of Us: Why we think how we do

Have you ever wondered why we think in the way we do?  This course aims to trace the changes in ideas, culture and mental patterning that have marked our journey from the Stone Age to the Age of AI.

We’ll be asking, and trying to answer, some big questions. For example, what makes us different from animals? What made us different from Neanderthals? What cultural assumptions changed when we gave up foraging to begin farming? Or when we moved into cities? Have our habits of mind been shaped by technological changes? How have religion and science affected our ideas? And what might all this tell us about the shape of things to come?

This is the final of three related day schools which, while complementing each other, can also be taken as stand alone courses.
