This one-day course is designed as an entertaining introduction to the subject, rather than a heavy-weight academic course for experts. Students who have no knowledge whatsoever of the ancient world will be made just as welcome as those with previous knowledge who want a refresher course. We will look at the history and evolution of ancient Greek theatre – how it emerged from a religious ritual, as well as its later links to democracy. Examples will be selected from a range of tragedies and comedies to illustrate the main plots and themes. There will be plenty of pictures to help bring the ancient world alive.
