By using a range of sources from the ancient world including grave markers, legal disputes and letters, it is possible to bring to life a range of Greek and Roman women. What we can learn about their lives tells us an immense amount about the society in which they lived. Some of the women we look at are famous, some almost unknown, some are rich, some poor. Their lives can inform us about a huge range of issues in the societies in which they lived including family life, the relationship between the sexes, politics and business. It is often assumed that we know little about ordinary women in the ancient world, but this course hopes to correct that assumption.
