Austen’s use of irony, social commentary, humour and realism are some of the reasons why her novels have remained popular over the last 200 years.
This course will look at Sense and Sensibility (1811) which an early review described as having ‘a very pleasing and entertaining narrative.’ We will then move on to Emma (1816) which was the last of Austen’s novels to be published in her lifetime and details the story of Emma’s well intentioned but ultimately meddlesome match-making.
