Republicanism, Civil War and Francoism in Spain

This course will focus on Spain in the years 1930–45, a dramatic period for Spaniards which spanned years of democracy and dictatorship. We will cover the changing politics, culture and society of a nation that underwent the turbulence of the Second Republic and civil war, followed by a period of right-wing dictatorship.  We will cover key areas such as the creation of the Second Republic, the failure of the Popular Front, the Nationalist and Republican leadership during the Spanish Civil War, and the establishment of Franco’s dictatorship: repression, censorship, the role of the church, economic approaches including autarky and neutrality during the Second World War. We will explore whether Franco’s Spain was a fascist regime and how modern Spain has reconciled with the legacy of dictatorship.

This course is fully booked, but please contact us if you would like to be added to the waiting list in case of any cancellations.
