Austen’s use of irony, social commentary, humour and realism are some of the reasons why her novels have remained popular over the last 200 years.
This course will look at one of Austen’s earliest works, Northanger Abbey, (although not published until after her death), which is a coming of age novel that explores the loss of imagination and the importance of separating life from (gothic!) fiction.
We will then move on to a study of Sense and Sensibility, which an early review described as having ‘a very pleasing and entertaining narrative.’
