An exploration of the history and politics surrounding the creation of the Weimar Republic, the rise of the Nazis and the Nazi state.

We will cover:

  • The end of the war, Weimar’s political crisis and the years of stability 1924-9.
  • The Early years of the NSDAP and the rise of Nazism.
  • The Road to Nazi Dictatorship
  • The Political and Economic structure of the Third Reich 1933-9
  • Nazi Society 1933-9
  • Germany at War 1939-45

 

We will be covering some key debates in history as part of this course including the role of the allies in creating discord in Europe through the terms of the Treaty of Versailles; the nature of the Nazi state – was it a chaotic polyocracy or an efficient state?; did Germany have a war economy in peacetime?; how popular was the Nazi regime in Germany 1933-9; why did the Holocaust happen?

This course will compare and contrast the Nazi State to other Fascist states in Europe, and will consider their key similarities and differences.

There will be no session on 25 October to allow for the half-term break.
