Empires: Part 3 – the rise of Europe

This day school focuses on the history and interaction of Empires in the Modern Era from about 1450 CE to the present day. The main theme is the rise of Europe, but we will not forget the formidable adversaries European powers faced from the Ming and Qin dynasties in China, through the Mughals in India, and the Safavids in Persia to the Ottomans whose Empire spanned three continents.

We will also learn about the rise of new Empires in the twentieth century such as Nazi Germany, Japan, the USSR and the USA. We will explore how all these Empires rose, interacted, functioned, and fell, and how they laid the basis for the emergence of the Modern World.

Finally, we’ll examine the legacy of Empire in our own times.
