Calling all Trollopes!

The first two weeks of the course will be spent looking at Miss Mackenzie (1865) who is described as ‘neither beautiful nor clever’ and is plagued by unsuitable suitors when she inherits a sizeable sum of money.  This novel is one of Trollope’s most incisive portraits of the plight of the unmarried woman in nineteenth-century England.  The following four weeks will be spent studying Trollope’s  He Knew He Was Right.  This novel explores a number of themes including the psychology of jealousy; class; marriage; infidelity; position of women; and the concept of work ethic.
